Josias Figueirido is an artist from Spain currently based in the United States. Prior to receiving his MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia (2017), he studied at the Royal Drawing School (2010) and at London Metropolitan University (2008), both in London.
Working primarily in painting, drawing, and printmaking, Figueirido’s biographical and fictional narratives channel social and philosophical dilemmas into highly personal images. His figures and scenarios are invented and constructed with an awareness of digital aesthetics.
The space is constantly oscillating between the virtual and the physical world. Humor and horror are interwoven within the narratives; the same characters, actions, and situations that amuse us also distress us. The overall psychological mood in the work suggests that unexpected danger may strike at any moment in an environment that is not as safe as it appeared.
Figueirido emphasizes the importance of constantly challenging one’s own ideas and practice. He deeply values the concentrated time and space that artist residencies have provided him, such as the Fabric Workshop and Museum’s Post-Graduate Apprentice Program, Philadelphia (2015), the Dumfries House Artist Residency, Scotland (2016), the Moritz-Heyman Artist Residency, Italy (2018), the CRE Fellowship at Second State Press, Philadelphia (2018), and the Vermont Studio Center, Vermont (2019).
Figueirdo’s work has been exhibited in the USA and Europe. Among other group exhibitions, his work has been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London, for the Atlante Exhibition at The Etching to Digital Prints Museum in Ribeira (Spain), and for the Portal: Governors Island art fair, in New York. His most recent solo exhibitions include “Give Me a Light That I May Walk Safely into the Unknown” at Marginal Utility Gallery, and “Anything Goes As Long As It’s A Joke” at C.R. Cindi Ettinger Gallery, both in Philadelphia. His works are in collections such as The Horseman Collection of American Art (St. Louis, MO), Paintings in Hospitals Collection (London), and Francisco Fernandez del Riego Collection (Vigo, Spain).
