English artist Laurence Stephen Lowry, RBA, RA 1 November 1887 – 23 February 1976). His paintings and sketches mostly feature Salford and its environs, as well as Pendlebury, Greater Manchester, where he spent more than 40 years living and working.
Lowry, an Irishman, and Elizabeth Lowry (née Hobson) had only one child. He had private lessons from William Fitz in addition to attending a nearby school in Victoria Park. Prior to beginning employment in 1904 as a clerk for a chartered accounting business.He studied painting and drawing at the Municipal College of Art from 1905 to 1915. It today is a part of Manchester Metropolitan University and was formerly known as Manchester College of Art. where Adolphe Valette served as his instructor.
