Bowie Unseen: Next month, fashion and celebrity photographer Markus Klinko will showcase never-before-seen images he captured of David Bowie as part of his show “Bowie Unseen.” The photographs, which will initially be on display for private view beginning Oct. 1 at London-based members club Tramp (where Bowie was once a regular), will then move to London’s Zebra One Gallery, where they will be available to view and purchase through the end of November.
In honor of Bowie, who died of cancer in 2016, a percentage of proceeds from sales will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Klinko took these pictures during the shoot for Bowie’s 2002 album Heathen, having been invited to do so after impressing the music icon with the photographs he had taken of his wife Iman for the cover of her first book, I Am Iman.

“Iman returned to the studio to take a look over the edits with me, and to my great surprise, David Bowie came along to help choose the cover,” Klinko recalls, according to a press release. “He was every bit as charismatic and extraordinary as one can imagine, but really kind and lovely to talk to. David was very involved in the selection process and had a great eye for imagery.”

“He is one of the very few celebrities I have worked with who personally got involved, and was extremely communicative and very hands-on,” Klinko says of working with Bowie.

Klinko remembers visiting Bowie and producer Tony Visconti at a Broadway recording studio, after he was asked to stop by to listen to some songs off of Heathen before they began discussing the album artwork.

“The mental image of Bowie sitting by a window, smoking cigarettes while his producer played the rough mixes from the board, is a memory that I will never forget,” shares Klinko. “After listening to almost the entire album together, we started talking about the shoot. He had many ideas and was very precise about them.”

“We were extremely excited that Markus Klinko flew over to London so that we could share these extraordinary images and raise funds for such an important cause,” says Zebra One Gallery owner Gabrielle du Plooy.
