This photograph was the first major group portrait of the Beatles taken by Terry O’Neill during the recording of "She Loves You" and its B-side "I’ll Get You" in the garden of Abbey Road Studios in London, July 1, 1963. The group would go on to be regarded as the most influential band of all time and prove integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. British photographer Terry O’Neill (1938-2019) made his name in the 1960s-70s, capturing shots of the stars he cosied up to on both sides of the Atlantic.
Attributing his success with celebrities to genuinely liking his subjects and offering plenty of ‘compliments’, O’Neill presented figures such as Frank Sinatra, Brigitte Bardot and his one-time wife Faye Dunaway, often in intimate and unconventional compositions.
